The Savonerrie carpet factory formally produced carpets for the French crown and the great estates of France. An almost identical slightly smaller carpet sold lot 125 Sotheby's New York 16 Feb 2000 measuring 729 x 450 cm. Conceivably this is one of a gigantic pair of carpets or perhaps the same carpet incorrectly measured.
