Indian Coromandel antique kalamkari chintz palampore fragment (87 x 113cm)

£ 480.00

87 x 113 cm  //  2ft 10" x 3ft 8"

Made for export to a Near East market, the waxed fragment comprises of two parts, which are joined through the centre. The large boteh designs were almost certainly the end panels of a large cover or shawl sized piece. The design itself is informed by contemporary Kashmir shawls of second quarter or first half of the 19th century. Notably, this particular rendition was taken up by later 'Mother and Child' boteh design rugs of Shiraz.

Produced in the transitory period when free drawn mordant resist methods were being supplanted by a hand-drawn and block printing mix, as evidenced in this piece, employing both techniques - of special note is the fine pink background detailing
