Kashmir was the summer retreat of the Mughal court and this passed on to the British period when local luxury goods became quality souvenirs. The top of the lid depicts a painted turbaned nobleman seated against a giant bolster floor cushion. Opposite him sits a lady contemplating him and smoking her hooker water pipe with her own big bolster. The sides are humorously flanked by painted tigers pursued by monkeys and bears. The base is in plain blue gloss and interiors in plain red and green.
Chipped to one end of the lid and some splits to the lid now retained.
