The medallion design likely stems from the Chinese Tang period that or Sogdian. Silks of this design have been sold continuously from China into the Tibetan market for a variety of purposes including Tanka scroll paintings, nobleman's clothing and temple embellishments. The field colour dye appears to be that of the peculiar cochineal red as that used for Tibetan monks wool robes.
Condition of the rug is worn but the rug has been stabilised by backing onto a cotton mount.
Evidently archaic and difficult to date.
