In Turkmen culture 'Ensi' rugs served as a door entrance covering for the yurt (felt tent), marked by its directional design. Not as an every day purpose, the rug would have been brought out for some special occasion e.g. betrothal or important guest. After Soviet and English contact, these became made commercially for the bazaar in increased quantities. Our authentic example here comes from an earlier period and was intended for its original purpose.
