Pirot, the name of a town in southern Serbia, along with the term ‘Sarcoy or Sharcoy’ and Oltenia, encompasses the region formally within the Ottoman Balkan dominions of Bulgaria, Macedonia but more particularly, Romania. The tapestry products of that region are more steered toward European naturalist expression in their weavings, which are usually technically unlike Turkish slit tapestry 'kilim’.
This joyous example is in the very best tradition of natural dyes and hand weaving, as carried on by a handful of cottage practitioners in the Konya region of central Turkey - a mix of tapestry and slit tapestry weaving.
