Turkmen Yomut antique ensi rug (174 x132cm)

£ 800.00

174 x 132 cm  // 5ft 9" x 4ft 4"

Within Turkmen culture 'Ensi' rugs served as a door entrance covering for the yurt felt tent and marked by a directional design. Obviously not as an every day purpose the rug would have been brought out for some special occasion of purpose e.g. betrothal or special guest. After Muscovite and English contact these became made commercially for the bazaar in increased sizes. Our authentic example comes from an earlier period and was intended for its original purpose as is evidenced being replete with its hanging plaits. In fact the previous owner also used it as a hanging since a tape was sewn along the top backside with poppers - we have decided to leave this in place

Generally in good pile having been hung with only a few lowish areas - one small repair and restoration particularly to the lower end flatweave, which was originally longer and is now lost
