Aleppo Ottoman period Aghahbani edged silk bedcover (225 x 174cm)

£ 840.00

225 x 174 cm  //  7ft 5" x 5ft 9"

This superb high-end luxury antique silk from Aleppo has embroidered silk parts in the Agabahni style chain-stitch and was likely intended as a bedcover. The item appears unused having likely been carefully stored away.

Aghabani is the name given to similar lesser Levantine / Syrian silk embroideries. The name purportedly from two Aleppo families said to have started this type of work, Al-Agha and Al-Bani. Confusingly, the work in yellow silk chain-stitch may be attributed to Bengal. Another previous example we once handled came with the signature including the citation of Syrian city, Aleppo.

Beautifully lined with a fine muslin-type cotton to add weight and stability
