Indian Coromandel palampore quilt (177 x 89cm)

£ 2,160.00

177 x 89 cm  //  5ft 10" x 2ft 11"

Drawn in what can be described as a late Mogul style, this fine quilt looks to have been produced in the transitory period when free drawn mordant resist methods were being supplanted by a hand-drawn and block printing mix, as evidenced in this piece, employing both techniques. The quilting stitch is in silk, which not only provides definition but offers highlights as well. The green silk edge binding was made as it was applied to the piece and is in the Central Asian style except for the fringing. The main cotton ground is hand-spun, as is the plain coarser lining used as backing. The interlining consists of thinly distributed cotton wadding.
