Bursa was and remains the principal centre for sericulture in Western Turkey but Chios Island in the Aegean was an important centre for the rearing of silk worm from 13th to early 19th century. It was said to have ceased in 1822 but more probably it continued on in a fashion from that time in a limited way. The northern Syrian town was also involved with silk making in a major way but having a style of its own for the Arab markets under Ottoman hegemony.
