Indian antique Punjab Hoshiapur with brass inlay (52 x 51cm)

The Hoshiarpur workshops in Northern Punjab served the Anglo Indian market circa 1900 probably until partician possibly employed Kashmiri artisans. The workshops still produce to this day but standards and materials have diminished. Sold throughout hill stations and cantonments and likely outlets in close-by Lahore and Delhi. Doubtless the clever folding octagonal design was intended for easy shipment. The styling in hardwood such as Padouk was based on earlier Mysore products in a combination of Moorish and Indian taste. Such tables came in four or five more or less standard sizes inlaid as this example with brass, copper and ebony.
 The example here has ebony stringing into padouk wood with brass and copper inlay.

One of the small arches at the top of the legs is not original has been replaced with a same period part from another simlar table with bone inlay. Some of the brass inlay is missing from the top and has been filled unnoticeably.
